 What is Phishing?

Posted by postmaster on 07/22/08
Phishing is a term used to discribe an attempt to "fish" for information. Although the spelling was changed to allude to such an attempt via e-mail, the term is now being used to refer to any attempt to illicitly extract information no mater by what method: e-mail, postal mail, telephone or face-to-face conversation.

 "Reserved" Mode

Domain Name Reserved image
When web visitors type in a SOHOSites.net registered domain name, they may see a webpage similar to the one shown here. This "Domain Name Reserved" page indicates that, while the visitor has typed in a valid domain name, there is no website currently available for them to view. There are several circumstances under which the "Domain Name Reserved" page will be displayed, rather than the home page of a website. For example:

  • the domain name may have just been registered, and no website has been developed

  • the website is being revamp, and contains no content

  • the website is experiencing technical difficulty

  • there is an unresolved billing issue

 What is an ISP?

Category: ISP
Posted by sitemaster on 06/29/08
An ISP is an Internet Service Provider. In the southern New England area, well known ISPs would include Cox Cable, Verizon, Comcast, and Road Runner. Hundreds of smaller ISPs exist as well, but with the interest in broadband being focused on just a few vendors, these players tend to be overlooked. The ISP is the company or entity that connects your computer to the Internet either by cable, telephone line or satellite. In return for this service, you pay an ongoing fee.

Accessing Your Mail Via the Internet

Web-based e-mail is included with each website domain hosted by SOHOBE. This allows you to access your e-mail from any computer with Internet access by using a web browser like Internet Explorer or Firefox. Simply add a slash and the word webmail to the end of your URL. For example, if your URL is www.sohosites.net, you would access your web-based e-mail by typing www.sohosites.net/webmail into the browser's address bar.

 Mail Servers Information

If your hosting plan includes e-mail, you will be getting POP accounts. SOHOSites POP accounts allow you to check your e-mail by using a web browser, or by using an e-mail client like Outlook Express or Thunderbird. The name of the mail server is mail plus a dot or period and then your domain name. For example, if your domain name is sohosites.net, your mail server would be mail.sohosites.net. Your mail server is both a POP and SMTP server. So, in the fields where that information should be entered, you would enter your server name, even though it may seem like it's duplicate information. Problems commonly arise when users enter additional, but incorrect, information. To again use sohosites.net as an example, the following would be incorrect: pop.sohosites.net, smtp.sohosites.net, pop.mail.sohosites.net, or smtp.mail.sohosites.net.
